Iron Monarch, approaching Rondo Is.

AIS is now widely implemented in SOLAS class vessels around the world. Although primarily intended for ship to ship communications, AIS offers real advantages for shore based vessel tracking and when combined with traditional sensor type information such as ARPA radar targets, provides a vessel tracking environment that exceeds AIS or ARPA individually.

HSA was an key contributor to the AIS trials held in the Great Barrier Reef between 2000 and 2001 conducted by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

HSA was responsible for providing AIS system capabilities for participating vessels using Endeavour Navigator and onshore using the REEFREP system.
