News and media releases from HSA December 2004 Deep Water Basin , Milford Sound – new Hydrographic Survey
An initial review of the survey data has indicates the edge of the tongue of debris extending out from the mouth of the Cleddau River would appear to have migrated into Deep water Basin by 30-40m. In view of the recent Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) initiatives in assessing all New Zealand surveys for ZOC classification, this survey has been completed to ZOC B standards in accordance with International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) guidelines. The survey will assist Environment Southland with its risk management planning for the area. November 2004 New head of Spatial Business Group
A recent picture of Phil (hairless), and the team after the October 2004 On October 5th and 6th 2004, Mr. Ern Payne of SGS conducted a surveillance audit of HSA’s Wollongong and North Sydney facilities. HSA successfully passed the audit which didn't identify any non-conformities.
The next audit will be HSA’s third Triennial audit, which is scheduled for October 2005. August 2004 ENC Cartographer - soon to join the suite of ENC Tools. HSA's S-57 ENC to INT1 paper chart conversion software. July 2004 Zones of Confidence Assessing New Zealand ’s Hydrographic Surveys HSA Systems has recently been awarded a contract to provide Zone of Confidence (ZOC) assessments for all of the hydrographic surveys used in the compilation of New Zealand ’s nautical charts from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). The 18 month contract will include hydrographic survey personnel from Discovery Marine Limited who will undertake a review of 134 nautical charts and approximately 2,000 hydrographic surveys. Zones of Confidence (ZOC) are quality values applied to hydrographic survey data. Each hydrographic survey used in the production of a nautical chart will be assessed and assigned a value from A to D with a further provision for Un-assessed data. The assessment will take into account positional accuracy, depth accuracy, sea floor coverage and the typical survey characteristics for each survey. The ZOC assessment process is based upon the International Hydrographic Organisations (IHO) S57 CATZOC criteria. When complete the project will be the first in the world to assign ZOC values to all of its hydrographic surveys used on nautical charts. New Zealand is one of the few countries in the world to provide mariners with depth data quality indicators on all of its charts. Park Raster Zoning Charts - GBRMP RZC for the Great Barrier Reef Marine
Park Authority - GBRMPA.
HSA Systems, on behalf of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority - GBRMPA, has produced a digital series of the authorities Marine Park Zoning Maps. This series of maps is called the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Raster Zoning Charts or GBRMP RZC. The Commonwealth Government of Australia, through the GBRMPA, has implemented a new protection regime for the Great Barrier Reef through the Representative Areas Program which is effective from July 1, 2004. The advantage of the digital chart product is the ability for the mariner to monitor their vessels position and progress accurately and in real time when used in conjunction with an Electronic Chart System (ECS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). This enables the user to confidently be aware of their location in relation to the Marine Park Zone boundaries and avoid encroaching into restricted areas. To find out more view our Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Raster Zoning Charts page. May 2004 HSA Systems releases version 5.3 of its popular Endeavour® navigation software. Version 5.3 has over 20 major and minor enhancements including the eagerly awaited USB dongle option. Enhancements made to this new version include: AIS capabilities updated to the new NMEA 0183 standard (version 3.01); additional enhancements to handle data in the S-63 encryption format; the list of data types that Endeavour® handles continues to grow, with the recent release of the Western Australia Raster Nautical Charts (WARNC) and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Raster Zoning Charts (GBRMP RZC). To find

IHO Recommended ENC Validation Checks, Standard S-58.
ENC Analyzer 2.1.5 has been built with reference to the new IHO Recommended ENC Validation Checks Standard S-58, Edition 2.0. The IHO special publication 58 (S-58) had been written to replace the Annex C to Appendix B.1 of the S-57 Edition 3.1, Recommended ENC Validation Checks. The IHO Recommended ENC Validation Checks Standard S-58 "specifies the checks that, at a minimum, producers of ENC validation tools should include in their validation software." The S-58 standard has been developed for the IHO with input from a number of hydrographic offices and software companies. Aligning ENC Analyzer's checks with the S-58 standard meant that substantial changes where made to modify existing rules to match the standard and provide a cross reference to both the appropriate S-57 ENC address and the corresponding S-58 rule. ENC Analyzer is not only an ENC QC tool but reinforces the ENC standard by allowing the user to investigate encoding rules from the relevant IHO documents. HSA Systems also took the opportunity to further improve ENC Analyzer by modifying checks to increase checking speeds and add enhancements identified in previous versions by our wide cross section of users.

ENC Analyzer - The ENC Validation Tool. History ENC Analyzer is the result of 20 years combined experience with ENC's. SevenCs AG & Co. KG of Hamburg and HSA Systems of Sydney, have a long and successful history in the production of ENC's, the development of ENC production and QA software and Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS). SevenCs AG & Co. KG and HSA have shown a strong commitment to the international hydrographic community with both companies being actively involved in international working groups and committees associated with the development of the S-57 standard. During the 1990's the two companies independently developed ENC Quality Assurance tools; DXaminer (HSA) and Analyzer (SevenC's). Both these products were widely used in the ENC production community. In 1999 SevenCs and HSA joined forces through the ENCore Project to rationalise their independent ENC QA tools into a single product. The result, ENC Analyzer, was a comprehensive QA tool that went beyond the combined capabilities of either of the previous products due to enhanced functionality and the addition of many new checks. A large proportion of the development effort involved testing ENC data sets from many different Hydrographic Authorities and ENC producers. This testing exposed the product to a wide variety of scales and encoding practices especially at the geometry level. Inspecting ENC data sets as they are made available by producers around the world is ongoing. This practice guarantees an extremely well tested product across a wide range of ENC products. Today's Product The use of ENC Analyzer has been growing rapidly and the product has found a place in many Hydrographic Offices and commercial ENC production houses around the world. The expanding use of ENC Analyzer has generated important customer feedback that has fuelled continuous refinement and enhancements to the underlying checks. These refinements have been reflected in the latest release - ENC Analyzer 2.1.3. Who's using it? Currently ENC Analyzer is being used by more than 20 Hydrographic Offices and commercial enterprises, including:

News and media releases
from HSA 10 December 2001 Electronic navigation tool from Hydrolink helps chart
Cook's voyage When Captain James Cook sailed around the coastline of
New Zealand in 1769, he navigated his way using a compass and sextant. Cook's journey of discovery was recently retraced for the
TV series Captain's Log. The show's presenter, Peter Elliott, sailed around
New Zealand on twenty different boats, exploring the coastline and revealing
the events that have shaped NZ's maritime heritage. Tools for navigation have changed enormously since the
days of Cook, and for Captain's Log Elliott's series of voyages were plotted
and displayed on screen using cutting-edge technology ‚ the electronic
marine navigation software Endeavour, provided by Hydrolink. The Endeavour software integrates a vessel's sensor equipment
with electronic charts. It brings together electronic charts, GPS, autopilot
and other sensors and provides complete voyage planning and vessel-monitoring
functions. It also allows voyage replay from the saved log files of sensor
input. Following in Cook's footsteps... some scenes from Captain's
Log The software was used as a base for the graphics displaying
the routes followed by Elliott around New Zealand. Hydrolink installed the software on the computers of production
company Livingstone Productions, along with Land Information New Zealand's
hydrographic raster charts, and provided training for the users. 'Endeavour is an extraordinary tool for marine navigation,' says Hydrolink's
Operations Manager, Kevin Smith. 'We were thrilled to work with the producers
of Captain's Log, retracing the travels of Cook and examining important
events in New Zealand marine history ‚ and looking at the ways in which
navigation technology has changed so hugely over the years.' Read more about Endeavour marine navigation software.
Hydrolink websites updated Hydrolink has revamped both its websites. The Hydrolink
website at www.hydrolink.co.nz
now features a clean new look and easier navigation, while the e-commerce
Chart Shop selling hydrographic charts and publications online has not
only been redesigned but also includes thumbnails of the charts available.
Hydrolink's Chart Shop is at www.charts.co.nz.
October 2001 Milburn cements relationship with Hydrolink Milburn New Zealand Ltd has contracted Hydrolink for the
supply of electronic navigation software, digital chart data and survey
data conversion tools. Milburn has two specialised bulk cement carrying vessels,
which are required to navigate around the New Zealand coast and in particular
the bar harbour entrances of Westport and Onehunga. The bar entrance at
Westport in particular is ever changing due to the littoral drift of sand
along the South Island West Coast and so requires regular dredging. This
means a constantly changing bar requiring regular surveying. This commitment has been demonstrated by introducing the
system, implemented by Hydrolink.
Milburn cement carrier at Westport The Westport harbour entrance The system involves: A data translator, which converts the latest survey information
(in DXF format) into an exchange format able to be read by the navigation
systems on board the vessels. On board navigation systems or Electronic Chart Systems
(ECS) able to read the survey data and display this information as a graphic
overlay on official electronic charts. Electronic charts for the areas of concern and for use
with the on board navigation system. Endeavour - transiting Westport bar Westport bar survey The survey data is collected and converted using the translator.
This converted information is then e-mailed to a vessel in transit. The
on board ECS is able to import and display the information. Typically
the displayed information contains depth soundings and depth contours,
which gives the vessel master an accurate and up-to-date model of the
ocean bottom. Endeavour is an Electronic Chart System (ECS) developed
by Hydrolink's parent company Hydrographic Sciences Australia. The product
has been widely available for several years and is extensively used by
the Australian Defence Forces, government, professional and recreational
mariners. Version 5 is currently under ECDIS Type Approval by DNV of Norway. Both the raster (HCRF) and vector (S57) data used by Endeavour
were produced by Hydrolink and HSA to International Hydrographic Organisations
(IHO) specifications under authority from Land Information New Zealand
(LINZ). Read more about Endeavour
marine navigation software.
September 2001 Hydrolink wins 3 year distribution contract Hydrolink has been awarded a 3 year contract for the storage,
correction and distribution of New Zealand's hydrographic charts and topographic
maps by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). The Hydrolink Map & Chart Centre is housed within a new
2000 square metre facility established by Hydrolink in Upper Hutt. Anne
Amer has been appointed Manager of the new facility. The Map & Chart Centre
became operational 6 weeks after the signing of the contract. At the opening
function, Brian O'Neil, Hydrolink's Managing Director, said: ìThe new
facility is a credit to the Hydrolink team and will be used as the national
base for Hydrolink's expansion program. This will include printed and
digital document management storage and services plus development of the
Geospatial and IT groups." Hydrolink is an accredited provider of hydrographic services
to Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). A range of hydrographic services
is provided to the New Zealand Government including the production of
hydrographic charts and surveys. Hydrolink is a subsidiary of Hydrographic Sciences Australia
(HSA). HSA have been providing specialist hydrographic charting and navigation
products to the Royal Australian Navy and the maritime public in general
for several years. Hydrolink sells topo maps Hydrolink is now a Land Information (LINZ) approved topographic
map retailer. The full range of New Zealand's 1:50,000 topographic maps
are available for sale from Hydrolink's Map & Chart Centre.
February 2001 Hydrolink produces more charts Hydrolink has once again been successful in winning a hydrographic
charting contract from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). LINZ releases
packets of hydrographic charts each year for tender by accredited hydrographic
service providers. This year LINZ released a total of 16 charts for compilation
and revision of which Hydrolink won 1 New Chart and 9 New Editions. All
charts are for the national folio and will be completed to LINZ/IHO INT
paper chart specifications. The charts will be compiled using digital
techniques. Hydrolink is a subsidiary of Hydrographic Sciences Australia
(HSA) who have been providing similar services to the Royal Australian
Navy for some years. LINZ is pioneering the way worldwide in the release of
hydrographic services for competitive tender. The fact that Hydrolink
has once again been successful demonstrates that private industry can
complete such work to a high level of quality, on time and to budget.
Hydrolink has consistently been awarded charting work since 1997 when
the competitive environment within New Zealand was first established. News and media releases
from HSA May 2000 Prices come down in updated Chart Shop Hydrolink's online Chart Shop has been updated in line
with the latest edition of NZ202, New Zealand's official Chart Catalogue. The site‚ which sells the full range of official New Zealand
hydrographic charts and other official hydrography publications‚ now features
cheaper prices for all products. It also includes updated graphics and
some new hydrographic charts, which will be available in July 2000. News and media releases
from HSA 20 July 1999 Website offers hydrographic charts for sale online Hydrolink Limited has launched its online Chart Shop, a
website selling hydrographic charts, at www.charts.co.nz. The secure e-commerce site has the full range of official
New Zealand hydrographic charts and other official hydrography publications
available for sale. "The Chart Shop will be extremely useful for both local
and international mariners, allowing them to easily access the full range
of hydrographic publications for New Zealand and the Pacific," says Hydrolink’s
Operations Manager, Kevin Smith. Seaworks searches for gold in the southern ocean This summer Seaworks placed two vessels in the southern
ocean as part of its marine management of Hydrolink’s surveying contract.
One of those vessels, the Seasurveyor, was subsequently used to search
for the wreck of the General Grant in the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands. The Seasurveyor in the Auckland Islands The General Grant sailed from Melbourne in 1866 with 83
souls and a cargo of gold aboard. After ten days at sea the forward lookout
spotted the towering cliffs that comprise the west coast of the Auckland
group. The ship was soon becalmed while the swells pushed it into a cave
where it finally sank. Fifteen people survived the shipwreck. They spent
18 months on the islands in terrible conditions. Five of them died before
the rest were rescued by a sealing party from New Zealand. Over the past 130 years there have been 29 attempts to
recover the gold from the General Grant. Bill Day, a director of Seaworks,
is a veteran of two of those expeditions. This summer he took advantage
of the presence of the Seasurveyor to mount a third expedition. A team
of 11 people swam 40 nautical miles of the west coast of the main Auckland
Island gathering data on wreck locations. The sub-Antarctic offered up
its usual hospitality of horrific weather conditions and great ocean swells.
The team were only able to dive for three and a half days on the 26 day
expedition. Even on those days the swells were often in excess of three
metres. Like any treasure hunter Bill is tight lipped about his
search results. It is known that he has found gold and silver coins on
previous trips. He has not yet claimed to have found the General Grant. Bill intends to spend the next few months analysing the
new data from this expedition before announcing his future plans.
11 March 1999 Hydrolink carries out high-tech hydrographic survey New Zealand hydrographic surveying is being carried out
using an advanced airborne surveying method never before deployed outside
the American continent. Recently established hydrographic company Hydrolink
Limited has been surveying the Snares and Solander Islands using the airborne
surveying method SHOALS (Scanning Hydrographic Operational Airborne Lidar
Survey).
The Snares and Solander Islands The SHOALS system – in its first application outside the
American continent – is being operated from a Canadian Twin Otter aircraft,
in conjunction with survey vessels which survey areas of deeper water.
The Twin Otter aircraft at Invercargill Airport Photo courtesy
LINZ Hydrolink Operations Manager Kevin Smith says that airborne
surveying is extremely safe, fast and efficient.
The rugged coastline of Solander Island, recently surveyed by Hydrolink. "The Snares and Solander Islands are pretty rugged. So SHOALS is ideal
for surveying the shallower areas close to shore, far safer than using
a ship. It’s also much faster than traditional vessel-based surveying,
and meets the International Hydrographic Organisation’s standards." The airborne section of the survey has now been completed
and the deeper water areas are being surveyed by boat. Unlike most marine surveying methods – which use echo sounders
to chart the seabed – SHOALS uses a laser which can penetrate water up
to 60 metres in depth. The infrared beam from the laser is reflected off
the water’s surface, while the blue-green component of the laser beam
penetrates the water and reflects off the sea floor. A computer calculates
the depth from the time interval between the two readings. SHOALS is also equipped with a geo-referenced and distance-calibrated
video camera which records an image of the area as it is scanned by the
laser. After the airborne collection of data is complete, the
raw lidar data is loaded for processing via a high density magnetic tape
into the SHOALS Data Processing System, on a SUN SPARC computer workstation. Fugro Survey Limited is using the Fugro-owned company John
E Chance and the US Army of Engineers to operate SHOALS. Hydrolink was awarded three major contracts from Land Information
New Zealand (LINZ) in 1998. The other contracts are the national contract
for maintenance and distribution of New Zealand’s hydrographic charts
and a contract for hydrographic chart compilation and revision. The Snares and Solander Islands are groups of islands west
and south-west of Stewart Island, and form part of the base points of
NZ’s Territorial Sea and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Read more about our hydrographic surveying services Read more about SHOALS News and media releases
from HSA 30 September 1998 Hydrolink wins in first round of contestable hydrographic
contracts World class skills in hydrography are coming together in
New Zealand with the emergence of Hydrolink Limited, a significant new
company in the hydrographic field. Hydrolink has been awarded three major contracts from Land
Information New Zealand (LINZ) in its first year of contestable hydrographic
contracts. All of LINZ’s hydrographic contracts were previously held exclusively
by the Royal New Zealand Navy. The three contracts - valued at just under 4 million dollars
- are the national contract for maintenance and distribution of New Zealand’s
hydrographic charts, a contract for hydrographic chart compilation and
revision, and the surveying contract for the Snares and Solander Islands
(groups of islands west and south-west of Stewart Island). Hydrolink was formed late last year in response to the
introduction of contestability for the LINZ hydrographic and bathymetric
contracts. "We wanted to bring together world class skills in hydrography,"
says Hydrolink Operations Manager Kevin Smith of the alliance. "We’re
thrilled to have done so well in LINZ’s first round of contracts, and
to be establishing a base for a long term presence in the hydrography
field in New Zealand." The chart production contract includes compilation of a
new chart, Kaikoura, which will be the first hydrographic chart to be
compiled in New Zealand solely using digital mapping techniques. "This is a very exciting advanced technology, and will
continue the very high standard of hydrographic products for New Zealand,"
says Kevin Smith.
