The inaugural World Hydrography Day

The United Nations, in its General Assembly Resolution A/60/30 of 29 November 2005; “Welcomes the adoption by the International Hydrographic Organization of the “World Hydrography Day”, to be celebrated annually on June 21st, with the aim of giving suitable publicity to its work at all levels and of increasing the coverage of hydrographic information on a global basis, and urges all States to work with that organization to promote safe navigation, especially in the areas of international navigation, ports and and where there are vulnerable or protected marine areas."

"85 Years of Advancing Worldwide Safety of Navigation"

This years theme "85 Years of Advancing Worldwide Safety of Navigation" gives direct reference to the work carried out by the IHO since its creation in 1921.

World Hydrography Day will be held annually on the 21st of June as this is the date that the IHO was created. The IHO was established in Monaco at the invitation of Prince Albert the 1st, an eminent navigator and oceanographer of the time. 85 years later the IHO is an inter-governmental organization consisting of 76 Member States that coordinates, standardises and advances the collection, display and distribution of nautical information.

In Australia World Hydrography day is going to be celebrated in style with a gala Ball at the National Museum in Canberra. The theme for the ball is “Girt By Sea” and it also coincides with the 400 year anniversary of the first recorded marine survey in Australia.

Awards will be made to a range of industry recipients by the Australian Hydrographic Society (AHS) to mark the occasion. More than 300 guests and their wives will celebrate the evening under the patronage of the Governor General of Australia.
