ReefView - Using Google Earth to Monitor Vessel Traffic and Plan Pilotage in the Great Barrier Reef

HSA has been working with AMSA and Maritime Safety Queensland for nearly ten years to provide information and systems for the effective management of shipping in the Great Barrier Reef. ReefVTS is the heart of The Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait Ship Reporting System.

The advent of Google Earth, combined with HSA's vessel target distribution system, enabled HSA to rapidly develop ReefView - an operational application to deliver near real-time information to Pilot companies operating in the Great Barrier Reef. This enables them to more effectively manage the deliver their services to the vessel fleet.

ReefView capabilities include :

  • Graphical display of vessels in transit through the Great Barrier Reef Ship Reporting System (SRS) with different vessel symbols to indicate the primary sensor that the vessel is being tracked with.
  • Graphical display of the 10 minute look ahead vector for each tracked vessel
  • Display of vessels at anchor or in port.
  • Display of essential attributes, such as Name, IMO number, geographic position, course, speed, vessle flag etc.
  • Display of layers of ancilliary information, such as the SRS route network, mandatory reporting points , pilot boarding grounds and the coverage areas for Radar and AIS
  • All vessel positions are updated every 10 minutes.
  • The system also maintains a live web page that gives information about all vessels approaching the pilot boarding grounds. This page is also updated every 10 minutes.
